8 tips for a healthy holiday in the sun
We all want to treat ourselves on holiday, but it is still totally possible to keep it healthy, balanced and have a fantastic time. Healthy choices definitely shouldn’t spoil the fun, and should in fact enhance it! These eight tips will help you feel great all holiday long.
1. Embrace the local and traditional foods
This is particularly relevant if you are travelling abroad. Many countries have traditional dishes that have been around for centuries using whole foods and fresh local produce such as fresh fish, wholegrains and delicious seasonal vegetables. These can often be simple, healthy and delicious. Also take advantage of the abundance of fresh fruits that many hot countries have to offer.
2. Make breakfast count
Whether you are self-catering or in a hotel, aim to eat a healthy and nourishing breakfast each morning. That way, whatever the day throws at you, you have started it well. Fruit and eggs are usually on offer at most hotels. If you are camping you could make some oats and add some nut butter and fruit. .
3. Stay hydrated
One of the fundamentals for good health is adequate hydration. When the weather is hot, although we tend to get more thirsty, we also sweat more too. Even low levels of de-hydration can cause headaches, dizziness and poor concentration. So remember to carry a bottle of water wherever you go and sip regularly throughout the day.
4. Have some alcohol free days
Many people like to enjoy a tipple on holiday and this can still be enjoyed in moderation as part of an overall healthy lifestyle, however do remember that alcohol is a toxin to the body and your detoxification organs such as the liver do need a break. As tempting as it may be to have a drink each day, give your body the time it needs to detoxify efficiently and keep a few days alcohol free.
5. Make the most of the menu
If you are in a restaurant where there are no visible healthy options, which can happen when travelling, try making a meal up out of the starters and side dishes. For example, a protein based starter such as prawns or mussels, coupled with a side salad and portion of vegetables can make a balanced meal, so get creative with the menu.
6. Stay active
It’s important to recharge and rest on holiday, however don’t miss out on the opportunity to get active too. Walk wherever you can, swim, play tennis, use the hotel gym if you have one, or go for a jog along the beach. Find at least one active endevour to enjoy each day, you will feel great for it and it makes the relaxation time feel all the sweeter.
7. Take new ideas home
This is more if you are going abroad, but you can often come across new traditional dishes as mentioned above. Make a note of them and when you get home have fun finding the ingredients and trying to recreate them.
8. Ease up a bit
Remember most holidays involve a little indulgence. You are there to enjoy yourself and what really matters is what you do on a consistent basis all year round, rather than for a few days of the year. So arm yourself with these principles, and enjoy a little of what you fancy too for a perfectly balanced holiday.
